- Consolidation in the media industry, which came into effect on 1 January 2005, led to the broadcasting industry reverting to a monopoly held by MediaCorp. The two channels run by SPH MediaWorks, Channel U and Channel i, were transferred to MediaCorp, which closed down Channel i by citing it was not viable to run so many English channels when the market is small.
