Military history of Canada in World War II
Summary
- Following the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, Canada's Parliament supported the government's decision to declare war on Germany on September 10, about one week after the United Kingdom and France. The Canadian government fully intended to enter the war, but Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King insisted on recalling parliament to allow a debate on Canadian participation and to underscore Canada's autonomy from the United Kingdom.
