- Sake Dean Mahomet (or Mahomed; Shaykh Din Muhammad in Arabic ) (1759-1851) is thought to have been the first native East Indian to have written a book in the English language. He wrote The Travels of Dean Mahomet, based on his travels in India and Ireland, which was published in 1794.
