Whole language

Summary

  • The Whole Language movement is an attempt to improve the teaching (pedagogy) of reading. It is often described as being in opposition to the phonic method of instruction, but whole language actually makes use of phonics (or graphophonemic cues) as well as semantic (meaning-based) and syntactic (structual) cues to help readers make meaning from a text.
